My favorite books for therapy

All therapists seem to have their favorite resources for recommending to clients or supporting their knowledge base.

Here are a few of mine!

Melody Beattie does an awesome job of explaining codependency in lay terms with case examples and self-evaluation.  There’s even an accompanying workbook!

The Emotionally Absent Mother was a game changer for me in understanding the concept of “re-mothering” yourself, what you lost if you have a toxic mother, and grieving the mother you should have had.  It explains the many facets of what a mother should provide emotionally, and how to get through the process of healing from that loss.

A therapy classic!  So many of the problems we face are the result of bad boundaries and Dr. Henry Cloud and Dr. John Townsend do a remarkable job of helping the reader understand.  I believe there’s an accompanying workbook for this one, as well.

An EMDR staple!  If you’re interested in how the brain handles trauma and the process through which EMDR can resolve that, you’ve got to read Francine Shapiro’s foundational work.

Mark Manson’s bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck totally blew my mind.  Spoiler alert: it’s got some pretty foul language.  But if that doesn’t bother you, Manson will change the way you perceive thoughts, goals, and life.

Not specifically a “therapy” book, but oh, so good.  I eat this sort of poetry up and Rupi Kaur nails that meditative, simple, deep, and moving genre.

I recently starting using this book as a sort of daily devotional and I can’t believe I hadn’t found it sooner.  So, so good!
